2007 NAPA QUALITY IN CONTRUCTION AWARD WINNER!
This project incorporated both overlay and reconstruction section throughout the project limits. Under normal circumstances this would not be a real issue, but when you are working on a PWL (Percent within Limit) job it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain consistent densities when moving from an overlay to reconstruction section. Our paving crews and quality control personnel worked together to vary lay rates, production rates, and roller patters to achieve consistent density results. The fact that this contract had PWL specifications involved added responsibilities to our Quality Control personnel to not only maintain the highest quality and consistency of our mixes, but to constantly monitor our suppliers\' materials to ensure their quality as well.
Another challenge that this project presented our crews was traffic control. This job was constructed on narrow county roads that service multiple state recreation facilities. This presented a unique challenge in that traffic control and sequencing had to consider the increased number of recreational vehicles and recreational drivers traveling through the construction site. Sequencing was also affected by an annual tri-athalon sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources which mandated that a large section of the pavement by completed through the intermediate course for use by the participants.
