E&B has, historically, been involved with asphalt and concrete paving on a wide variety of
State, Federal, City and commercial projects. Approximately 75% of our work volume is public sector work. The number one,
most asked question that we hear is; "What does E&B stand for?"E&B Paving, Inc. was incorporated on 9/26/67 with one plant located at Irving Brother’s stone quarry in Muncie, IN; as a wholly owned subsidiary of Stony Creek Stone Co.
The principal officers were Jack R. Euratte, President and Richard Bedwell, Vice President. Hence, the not too imaginative, name E&B. Jack died suddenly while playing handball with, ironically, a doctor friend. Incidentally, Richard Bedwell was Jack's uncle; however, he was not very active in the company. In any event, Bill Irving was named President and Oren West was named Vice-President.
Ten years passed before the second E&B plant was purchased in the Fall of 1977 and became operational in the Spring of 1978 at Stony Creek Stone east of Noblesville, IN on SR 38. Gary Stebbins was named Vice-President, General Manager, Noblesville. Oren West continued as V.P., Muncie.
In 1986, Gary Stebbins was named VP., General Manager of both Muncie and Noblesville operations when E&B Paving was the successful bidder on three sections of I-69. Two more plants were purchased from Mohr Construction in June of 1984. Also, at this time, E&B took over administration of an asphalt plant owned by Erie Stone, Bluffton an Irving Brothers subsidiary.
Our first portable plant was purchased in the spring of 1986 for an $8.4 million dollar resurfacing project on US 30 in Whitley Co., IN; which was, at that time, the largest single contract in the company's history. Acme Paving Co. of Anderson, IN (with 5 plants) was acquired in December of 1986. The corporate office and main repair shop facility were relocated from Noblesville to its present location in Anderson at Acme's old office in the Spring of 1987.
Historically, E&B had stayed on the fringes of the Indianapolis market, preferring to confine operations to the north-east quadrant out of Noblesville. Due to increased demand and a strong, growing market, the decision was made to open an Indianapolis office and plant on the south side of Indy. This facility was opened in 1988 on South Harding St.
Our rapid growth did not stop there! All the assets of McMahan-O'Connor Construction Co. of Rochester, IN were acquired in March of 1992. This acquisition expanded E&B's asphalt paving capabilities and added concrete paving, bridge construction and earthmoving expertise to the company. Rochester was retained as an area office. Marion Paving, Marion, Indiana, was acquired on May 1, 1994.
Gary was named President in April of 1992 when the company was reorganized into two primary areas; North & South. Ross Cole was named V.P. North and John Eller was named V.P. South at this time. Ross has since retired and Tony Evans has taken his place. Ron Zink was named V.P. of the Concrete Division headquartered at the Rochester Office.
With the merger of the Irving Brothers Group of Companies into imi in the spring of 1993, E&B Paving, Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of imi. The company expanded again in 1997 when we opened a new plant and office in Evansville, Indiana.
The Indiana assets of S.E. Johnson, Inc. were acquired in March of 2002. These included an office and plants in Ft. Wayne and a plant in Angola, Indiana. Our most recent acquisition was the purchase of the balance of Mohr Construction Co., Inc. of Kokomo, Indiana in November of 2003. Mohr Construction is operated today as a division of E&B Paving with Larry Canterbury as Area Vice President.
Today, our strategically located plants serve a wide area of Central , Southwestern and Northeastern Indiana. In addition, our portable asphalt and concrete plants can be moved and set up anywhere for individual projects.
